Mocha Stars

For this scrappy project, I suggest choosing a variety of light, medium, and dark prints for the required fat quarters - keep in mind that you'll want the majority of these prints to stand out well from your brown border print so that your stars don't become "lost". Please arrive for class with the pieces specified below pre-cut, so we can dive right into the fun stuff. See you soon!

Project Supplies
18 fat quarters of assorted prints for stars, flower appliques, and berry appliques
2 1/2 yards of brown print for border and binding
3/4 yard of light tan print for block background
3/4 yard of medium tan print for block background
1/2 yard of medium green print for vines and leaf appliques
1 fat quarter of light green print for leaf appliques and flower center appliques
4 yards of fabric for backing (not used until after class)
67" square of quilt batting (not used until after class)
3/8" bias bar

Standard Sewing and Quilting Supplies, Including:
Sewing machine* with adjustable tension, capable of producing a very small zigzag stitch
Rotary cutter, mat, and acrylic ruler (can be shared between two people)
Size 75/11 quilting needles for your sewing machine
Ironing board with a firm surface, and an iron (travel-size or mini applique irons work best in class situations, and can be shared between two people)
Embroidery scissors and an inexpensive pair of scissors for cutting paper
Awl or stiletto tool with a sharp point
.004 monofilament thread in smoke and clear colors
Neutral-colored sewing thread
Freezer paper and pencil (mechanical is best)
Fabric glue, water soluble and acid-free, in liquid (Quilter's Choice by Beacon's is my favorite) and stick form Fray Check (recommended, but not required)
*/ If your sewing machine has a knee-lift attachment, an open-toe foot, and a spool pin adapter to position your thread upright as you sew, please bring them.

Cutting Instructions:

From each of the 18 assorted print fat quarters, cut:
  • 4 rectangles, 5" x 11" (for star points); save and bring your scraps to class
  • From the light tan print, cut:
  • 2 squares, 20 7/8" x 20 7/8"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield a total of 4 triangles
  • From the medium tan print, cut:
  • 2 squares, 20 7/8" x 20 7/8"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield a total of 4 triangles
