STRIPPY STARS

Workshop Date:
Friday, March 20, 2009

Workshop Location:
TBD

Strippy Stars

Machine - all day or half day - 20 students.
Skill level - beginner, intermediate.

Reminiscent of an early 19th century chintz strippy quilt, come prepared to step back in time to stitch this re-creation. Fabric selections discussed, neat piecing technique and pressing tips given.
Use one of the large florals or pillar prints available today to re-create this beautiful quilt, or consider the Patriotic version.

We will need

  • Sewing Machine in good working order with a 1/4" foot.
  • Basic sewing supplies - suggestions - scissors, pins, seam ripper, extra needle for machine, wound bobbins, Ott light for extra light (optional).
  • Thread for piecing - 100% fine cotton thread, like Presencia 50 wt or Aurifil 50 wt in a neutral shade such as tan, taupe or light brown.
  • Rotary cutter (with good blade) and small rulers up to 12" suggested, 6" or 6-1/2" square recommended - we will be cutting small pieces and 24" rulers are overkill and take too much room.
  • Small cutting mat - 12" x 18" (or several large cutting mats to be shared)

Fabrics
  • For star piecing - small pieces at least 6" x 9" each of 19 medium AND 18 darks - see picture and not low contrast and busyness of fabrics.
  • 3/4 yd of setting fabric - for triangles - should be a viney/busy print to successfully pull off this chintz look. (viney - think vine entwining up a lattice - carries the eye from the black across the setting triangle into the next block).
  • Borders - you will need 1 1/4 yd for outside border and 1 1/4 yd for the setting strips (2), you may wish to piece these strips, then get 1/2 or 3/4 yd.
  • Binding - 1/4 yd for single thickness binding, or 1/2 yd for double fold binding.

Classroom needs - a couple irons and ironing boards/mats and a table for teachers gear.
