At the end of the nineteenth century or near the turn of the twentieth century, just about every quilter had a blue and white quilt with fancy stitching she saved for a special occasion and often made as an heirloom to celebrate a birth or wedding. Indigo blue was often the choice because of its colorfast properties. (Page 55 of American Doll Quilts )
